Scarlett Thomas and Halley Cooke have been best friends ever since they became neighbors in third grade. Halley's mom sends her to summer camp, right before Junior year takes off, just as things start to change. Michael Sherwood, Scarlett's boyfriend, dies in a motorcycle accident. Michael was a unique guy that everybody liked and will be greatly missed. Halley tries to keep Scarlett strong for the start of school.
Halley meets Macon Faulkner in P.E. class, and they become very close. Macon was Michael's best friend. They start dating, but Macon always seems suspicious about his whereabouts. Halley starts to change in ways that aren't like herself. She skips class with Macon, and sneaks out of the house. Her mother, a therapist, fears that their mother daughter relationship is weakening. On top of that, Scarlett finds out that she is pregnant with Michael's baby.
Time goes by and Scarlett's pregnancy goes by smoothly. For the first time in years, Halley spent Thanksgiving at a buffet because she was visiting her sick grandmother. The sickness of Grandma Halley put large amounts of stress on her mother.
New Years rolled around and Halley decided to go to a party with Macon. On the way home from the party, they get into a car accident. Macon promises to stay by Halley's side, but disappears when Halley is rushed to the hospital. This causes them to break up, but it is hard for Halley to get over him.
More time goes by and finally it's prom night. Scarlett wants to go to prom, which means Halley has to go too. Halley goes with Noah, a family friend. Scarlett goes with Cameron, Scarlett's other best friend. Noah gets drunk before prom and ruins Halley's night. When things couldn't get any more complicated, Scarlett goes into labor. She is rushed to the hospital and makes Halley stay by her side. To close the book, Scarlett gives birth to a baby girl and names her Grace Halley Thomas.
